Meet Tim.

Tim joined August as a front end developer after working with a SaaS company and an industry body within the areas of business process management and government relations.

He brings a refreshing perspective to the team having worked with manufacturers, government organisations and construction companies – areas we are known to operate in and industries we love contributing to.

And here’s a little fun fact before we get into some of the questions we recently asked Tim. He has represented Australia six times in the sport of Ultimate Disc. In his spare time you’ll find him sprinting, lifting and throwing for national and world championship events. …Expect an August team in 2021!

If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Almost certainly. Having just finished some extended international travel, I know that my brain needs a bit of structure and routine to stay happy, which is certainly much easier when you’re employed! I chose to move into front-end development because I love problem solving and learning how things work, so I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my time.

Do you cook? If so, what’s your specialty?

Food is a big passion of mine. I’m often thinking about how to improve my skills in the kitchen and watch an unhealthy number of YouTube videos featuring chefs from all over the world.  I love baking, so naturally my speciality is cookies. Brown butter, dark choc, sea salt. Ugh, I’m drooling. Here’s the recipe I use.

Which website or piece of technology do you find most inspiring?

I frequently check out CodePen.io to see how people with much more experience than me are approaching problems and creating cool things. I love seeing how developers create innovative micro-interactions, build out proof-of-concepts or simply use HTML as their canvas and CSS as a brush to intricately craft masterpieces. Gah, so incredible!

What is one skill in the world of digital you hope to improve this year?

I’d love to improve my skills in regression testing. In a previous role, I saw incredible variety in tools, processes, and maturity, so I want to finish the year with a clearer picture of what dedicated testers are using, and be better equipped to implement these solutions.

What’s on your music playlist right now?

I’m listening to Sam Smith on repeat at the moment. I missed out on seeing them at Mardi Gras and I heard the performance was incredible. Strangely enough, the grieving that we’re all experiencing for the loss our livelihood is very similar to love lost expressed in a lot of their songs, so it seems to be fitting for the current mood. Treat yo’ self to this tasty musical treat.

What is your all-time favourite quote?

“Everything in moderation, including moderation” Oscar Wilde.

If you’re a hedonist, remember that there is pleasure in delayed gratification. If you’re a stoic, remember to enjoy yourself once in a while.

What is the most bizarre food you’ve ever eaten? (and would you eat it again?)

On a trip to China, I had a serving of stinky tofu. Lucky for me, I had a blocked nose. Unlucky for everyone else in the restaurant, it actually smells like raw sewage.

I don’t think I need to experience that again.

It was heaps of fun to attempt to eat like a local and really challenge any pre-conceived notions of normalcy set by my western diet.

If you could invent one wearable device, what would it be and what would it do?

I would love if my watch would listen to all the times I said I was going to do something, then set reminders so that I would *actually* get them done. It would also be great if it could zap me when I’m lacking willpower to follow through on commitments or changes of habits.
